As we get older there are certain inevitable changes in our appearance and our physical capabilities. Specifically many people find that weight loss after 40 can be especially difficult. While losing weight and keeping in shape can be more of a challenge as we get older, it’s far from impossible.
The key to weight loss after 40 is to understand that the body you have now isn’t the same one that you had when you were 20. You cannot simply eat whatever you want and exercise infrequently and expect to stay in good shape. You need to make smarter choices and treat your body the right way in order to lose weight and get into shape. By understanding that it takes more work and discipline at 40 than at 20 to lose weight, you can put yourself on the path to reaching your goals.
One of the main reasons that people tend to gain weight as they age is that their metabolism changes. Most of us could eat cheeseburgers, and candy bars all day when we were in our twenties without seeing any negative impact. Unfortunately, with the exception of a few people, our metabolisms change as we get older causing poor eating habits to cause us to gain weight. So with age comes a drop in metabolism and there is nothing that we can do about it. Or is there?
While your body might tend to naturally slow down with age, you can have an impact upon this. Through a combination of exercise and healthy eating you can help to keep your metabolism running at a higher level, which is the key to weight loss. The first step in boosting your metabolism is with exercise. While most people think that aerobic exercise is the key to weight loss, they are wrong. The type of exercise that can have the biggest impact upon your weight loss goals is resistance training. By engaging in resistance training you will build muscle, which takes more energy to maintain in your body than fat does. Since muscle takes more energy to maintain, your body will burn more calories as you gain more muscle mass.
There are three specific things that you need to be aware of if you are doing resistance training and have weight loss goals. First your body doesn’t build muscle during a workout, it does so during rest. This means that you shouldn’t train everyday, you should train only every two to three days. Second, if you want to build muscle tone then you should use light to moderate weights and do high repetitions. Third, your body will begin to adapt to the rigors your training regimen quickly. Once you no longer feel that an exercise is challenging you, then you should switch to an alternative. By changing your training routine frequently you force your body to continuously adapt, which ensures that you continue to make progress.
While resistance training is the most beneficial thing you can do to work toward your weight loss goals, aerobic workouts are important as well. You cannot do resistance training every day, so you should try to do an aerobic workout on days that you don’t do resistance training. Aerobic workouts will help you to burn fat, and are also good for your heart and lungs.
The last, and possibly most important, component of your weight loss plan needs to be your diet. A common mistake made by dieters is to try to implement a very strict diet. While this would be successful, it is also impossible to maintain over a long period of time. The key to successful dieting is to reduce the amount of sugars and processed flour that you eat, reduce the amount of fat you intake, and increase the amount of lean protein in your diet. This means that when it’s time to eat you need to carefully think about your choices. If you are having chicken, have grilled chicken when possible. If you must have a burger, aim for one with lots of vegetables and a whole wheat bun. By making smarter choices with your diet, and implementing an effective exercise program you can meet your weight loss goals.
